Cyclospora cayetanensis

A parasite that can contaminate produce and cause prolonged diarrheal illness.

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite. CDC describes cyclosporiasis as an intestinal illness that can follow eating contaminated food or water.

Symptoms can include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, and fatigue. Illness may last days to weeks if untreated.

Washing produce helps with many contaminants but may not remove Cyclospora; cooking kills the parasite.
