Salmonella

A common group of bacteria that cause foodborne illness (salmonellosis).

Salmonella bacteria live in the intestines of people and animals. FoodSafety.gov lists vegetables, chicken, pork, fruits, nuts, eggs, and beef among foods linked to Salmonella.

Illness often includes diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, and vomiting. Most people recover in several days; severe cases may need medical care.

Cook foods to safe temperatures, avoid raw or lightly cooked eggs and undercooked meat, and wash hands after contact with animals.
